Latest News

Our latest interview is with CylonRomo, who has published a fascinating website on why he thinks Battlestar Galactica's erstwhile attorney in sunglasses is the twelfth final Cylon.

1. How long have you been a BSG fan?

I've always been a sci-fi fan. I slightly remember the original series and my memories of it were not good. In the late 70s, there was a television culture that felt the need to dumb down anything sci-fi related and even cartoons like "The Superfriends" or the obscure 70s ani-epic "Gatchaman" (re-named and butchered for American television as "Battle of the Planets" with Casey Kasem voice dub). Like the Superfriends and the dreaded Wondertwins, the original BSG in my memory included children, robotic pets, and guys in plastic silver armor and I was never interested (even at the age of 7). It was for this reason I initially rejected the reimagined series on the Sci-Fi channel. However, since BSG followed my then-favorite show Stargate SG-1, I caught an episode that intrigued me. I cannot remember the episode, but I then gave the mini-series a shot. At first, I was still unconvinced. But as I continued to watch the shows being aired (in season 1) I became more interested. You could say I was a hard sell on the series.

2. In a few short sentences, could you explain why Romo Lampkin is the most likely candidate to be the final twelfth Cylon? Why not, say, Tom Zarek or one of the other secondary characters?

In my opinion, the last major character to be introduced to the show (complete with backstory and character development) was Admiral Cain - at the end of Season 2. Everyone else has been known for a while and many of their characters have evolved at least in some capacity. For Romo Lampkin to be a totally new character introduced so late toward the series' end is - itself - a major clue in terms of storytelling. He has backstory, personal inner issues, and potential for massive character development. We know much more about the inner workings and personal strife of Romo than we do about people who have been there from the beginning like Zarek, Dualla or Gaeta. But for me, the "cat-out-of-the-bag" incident was a major lightbulb even on the first watch of the episode. The cat had no relevance to the story. Everyone knows when you let the cat out of the bag, you've told the secret. If I am right, that one little scene in season 3 was telling us through metaphor that we are dying to know - even now - throughout the conclusion of the series.

3. There have been many Internet posts and threads commenting on the famous DaVinci BSG Season 4 promo. Do you think the writers pay as much attention to these sorts of details as the hard-core fans?

I truly doubt the writers think as much about the show mythology as the fans. From the fansites and commentary I've heard from hardcore fans, we always go way beyond what I think will ever be portrayed in the show. That isn't to say the writers don't or haven't already the considered the complex theories and details the fans do, it just means they are constrained by the made-for-TV medium. There might be clues in the Last Supper image, but I have yet to see anything revelatory in it.

4. Are you a Mark Sheppard fan? Did you follow him in series like Firefly?

No, I actually don't know much of anything about Mark Sheppard. But along with some of the major players on Galactica, he's a great actor.

5. Who are some of your favorite BSG characters and why?

In my opinion, Admiral Adama, Roslin, Baltar, 6, Starbuck and Tigh (and Lampkin) are amazing actors. They truly make the show human and believable. The rest of the cast are fine actors as well, but these guys are, for me, the crux of the show. Baltar has to be my favorite for his versatility. His comical skits while multi-tasking with the Head 6 are legendary. I will follow James Callis' work to see what he does next for sure.

6. What is your favorite BSG episode and why?

"Lay Down Your Burdens, Part 1" is my favorite. It's hard to pick one. But in this episode, there is a really pensive vibe. It is portrayed and heightened by a certain song played throughout the episode. There is an air of change and of doom. You don't know what it is, but you feel it. New Caprica is on the horizon and the whole episode is filled with gloom and darkness. Everything is going to change. This was one of the most palpable episodes in my opinion. It permeates thoroughly. My favorite moment, however, might be Galactica falling through the air on New Caprica releasing Vipers - only to jump at the last moment. That was frakkin cool.

7. What prompted you to create your website and how did that all come about?

My website began as a page of text with the Romo Lampkin as Final Cylon. That was it. Back when the Matrix films were extremely popular, I started a website on the Matrix Mythology and to my astonishment, it made it to #1 on a Google search in that category. That site remains there to this day and has had thousands of visitors. The BSG site became kind of an experiment when I then expanded from the Final Cylon conjecture and into the mythology of Battlestar Galactica itself. So, I started adorning the site and writing more and more and currently, "Battlestar Galactica the Final Cylon" will reveal my site on page 2 of a Google search. I then decided to start adding to the content I had written after each episode. Whatever happened in that particular episode, I would apply it to the sub-sections of my theories and my perceived mythology. I thought it would be fun to make a theory and then follow it to the show's end to see how right or wrong I was. And yes, I'll keep the site up even after the series ends.

8. What has been the main issue other fans have raised about your Final Cylon theory?

I used to get emails every day that take issue with the fact I never even included Tom Zarek in my theory. I added a section about Zarek recently to offer an explanation. But since the "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" episode, I've gotten A LOT of Gaeta theories. Since I tie in so many different parts of the mythology to make my case, I get emails from people who argue one point or another and it is fun to re-hash the various sources. I love to discuss the mythology of the series in general.
